The Rushi Headpiece is one of our most beloved designs. On each side, four removable components allow you to change the look and styling of this piece endlessly.
Named after Liu Rushi (1618–1664) was a poet, an independent spirit (she often cross-dressed), known as one of the "Eight Beauties of Qinhuai" and a patriot. Sold by her family into prostitution at an early age, Liu Rushi had a hard life, but with her intelligence and talent for writing poetry she quickly became popular with highly ranked politicians, poets and leaders. In 1640 Liu embarked on a campaign to marry the respected scholar Qian Qianyi. Dressed in men's clothing, she accosted Qian and requested his opinion on one of her poems, which got his attention. They were soon married which broke many rules in China at the time. Her affinity for cross-dressing persisted after they were married; she regularly wore men's clothing whilst in public. This affectation earned her the nickname rushi, "Confucian Gentleman", which also puns on her chosen name Rushi.
